You wear out your rear brakes faster.

My little brother did that once. His brakes caught on fire. If you had a little oil near your brakes you could have a potential problem.

Well your brakes would generate an insane amount of heat, and if you add a combustible liquid, expect fire.

OK, I'm assuming you did this. First if you didn't notice it right away chances are the parking brake wasn't actually actuated it's just the light on the dash.

If it was actuated then you must have noticed. If not, what happens depends on the type of system you have.

A drum in hat: has a small drum brake like system in the rear (more than likely driver's side) rotor hat. Which means that tire will not spin or it will drag. But the service brake (the "normal" brake) will not be effected.

If you have a ball and ramp: Same as drum in hat. Ball and ramp is just a cheaper system and not as sturdy.

If you have a caliper integral system: Now you've got problems. This uses the caliper itself to actuate the parking brake and it's just like driving around with your foot on the brake. You know you have this system if you need a special tool to push back the caliper piston when replacing pads. Many GM (Delphi) systems use this type.

The drum in hat is the best of the 3 and the most expensive.

either way, check your rear pads and rotors, get them replaced if you messed them up, and change your brake fluid cause you fried that. Unless you have rear drummers, then chech the shoes cause they're probably worn to shit, and make sure you didnt mess up the drums.

there is also a good chance of just stretching/breaking the cable, and nothing else.
