E85 Anyone using it yet ?
So I saw a couple gas stations in town with E85. I though well 85 octane rating sucks ahaha, then I look closer to the price and its dirt cheap. But wait I look even closer and its 103 octane rating. Hmm I started asking around friends and a couple are using it. It burns cleaner and faster, also they sais they changed the fuel lines and had to tune the car. I dont care about gas milege, I just want good fuel and this one so far sounds nice. I cant travel 20 miles every day to get race gas from the speedway so I am thinking this is an alternative. High octane rating, maybe with nice tune more boost less knock. Any one has any comments on E85?

Re: E85 Anyone using it yet ?
People have been extremely successful with E85. I've seen people making 600-700 whp. If it was available locally, I'd be running it. You need to burn ~33% more of it than gasoline, so any cost savings are roughly negated by the increased consumption. Octane rating is usually quoted in the 105-110 range. It's essentially 85% alcohol and 15% gasoline, but in the winter months they dilute it more, which makes the motor start/run better in the cold, but reduced the octane rating naturally.
You have to be sure everything in your fuel system is alcohol compatible. And since you have to burn so much more fuel, you need a much more robust fuel pump and injectors than you normally would for a given airflow.

A lot of people are starting to use this and having great success with it. There is a huge thread at tuners about it. Lots of good info there.

Re: E85 Anyone using it yet ?
Thor's going to be rockin the E85! I need the DSMlink, bigger injectors, and I need to toss in the fuel pump, but I hope that I'll be about mid summer.
I've heard a lot of talk about needing to take all the aluminum and rubber out of the fuel system, but I've also head a lot of people with a completely stock fuel system (aside from the pump, injectors, and AFPR) that run it without problems. Just be sure to watch it if you do use the normal rubber injector seals, check them from time to time to make sure they arent leaking. |
