Hey all! Just wanted to see how many of you had this happen before. We were driving down a major interstate today and all of a sudden we hear a loud pop and our rear glass had shattered and left a gaping hole!
It was fairly cold, about freezing, and we had the defrost on for awhile, turned it off for a bit, then back on. Wondering if the temperature had anything to do with it? I am curious about what happened, anyone wanna venture a guess? Getting the glass replaced tomorrow! Thanks! |

Re: Shattered back glass-driving down hwy!
Are you sure someone didn't shoot it out with a BB/pellet gun? There was a rash of incidents south of where I live where kids thought it would be funny to shoot at moving vehicles.

I don't believe so, i mean, we were driving about 60 mph down a major interstate and it was pouring rain, so I don't think anyone would have shot at us.
But you never know! |

Re: Shattered back glass-driving down hwy!
I've heard of several possibilities, but the most common cause is something hit it whether it was falling debris or a kicked up rock. Some have said running the front defrost on the hotest setting with ice on the windshield can cause it to crack. I've never heard that one before. But, most of us know that you can't take glass and make it change temperature too fast or it will brake. I don't think that's what happened to you, but it is possible, weak glass, etc,.etc., My last scenario is of a friend who was pumping gas and his back window just exploded. For whatever reason, the glass was unstable, under a lot of stress and something triggered to break. In your situation, I"m leaning towards a rock or something hit it mostly because of the hole that was created. But the hole doesn't mean it had to be caused by something hitting it. If you can find a circular spider web, and even better, a cone of glass, than it was definitely was hit by something.
