Jerky gears shifting and strange noise when warm..
I know, i know....
This problem has been mentioned here before. My Century 2000 (52.000 km) in the warmer weather, and mostly in stop and go trafic (city) developed a strange problem. The shifting becomes jerky and strange whining sound comes out of the engine compartment ( sounds similar to small el. motor). When the engine cools off, the shifting 'goes back' to normal and the noise dissapears. When I noticed the jerky gear change and the noise, I stopped the car, put the gear shift in 'Parking' , stepped on gas pedal wondering whether the noise would go away in different RPMs. It did not. Shifting the gear lever to 'Neutral' did not get rid of the noise. Would you reccomend to put any 'slick 50' type fluid additive into aut. transmission? If yes - how much? I am hesitant to take the car to dealer, since I read here similar complaints and most of them have not been corrected by dealers. Here in Canada, any visit to them is quite expensive for car owner. Somebody here suggested an additive. I would realy appreciate any input on this by our 'resident' technicians. If this is a mechanical problem, would any certified Transsmission shop be able to get ris of this problem? My wife and I like the car othervise. Actually, I used to own a 300D Mercedes and this Century has got just as nice ride as my Mercedes did. |

Might want to try Lubegard in conjunction with a filter change and ATF fluid drain first. The whining sound and harsh shifting problem is probably the worst one to have because a lot of Century owners had the pressure control solenoid changed or the tranny rebuilt only to have the problem return or it didn't fix it. Tranny shop should be able to tell you if you have any tranny specific DTC error codes mainly manufacturer specific such as P1XXX (P1870, P1811, etc) or check why the high line pressure exists. Good luck! |
