Hi, I have a 2001 Chevy Impala 3.8L with 93K on it.
When the car warms up after driving it for a while, it starts making a loud whining sound from under the hood. It doesn't do it when the car is cold, only when it's warm and the temperature gauge is about half way or higher. The sound is the only problem, it does not affect the way the car runs or the temperature of the car. Anyone know what this could be or what I should check for? Thanks. |

Re: 2001 Impala 3.8 Whining Sound?
I don't think it's the power steering because I know the sound that makes and it's different. The sound my car is making is a constant high pitched almost whistling sound. Also, I don't think it's that because the power steering makes sounds at all temperatures especially when you first start the car or turn the wheel.

Re: 2001 Impala 3.8 Whining Sound?
Maybe a slipping serpentine belt?
I'd check the power steering fluid anyway. It's down behind the alternator, way down behind the engine. For what it's worth, my power steering pump only whines when it is hot, never when it's cold. |
