1995 Ford escort steering wheel

I just replaced the headlight switch (multi-function) and when I took the steering wheel off I guess I pulled too hard and now the steering wheel moves in and out. It's when I put every thing back together that I noticed that I could move the steering wheel out about 1-2 inches. can any one tell me how to fix this??? ASAP!! this is my daily Driver

Re: 1995 Ford escort steering wheel

If your 95 is similar to my 92 (with the 1.9L engine) you may have pulled the sliding joint in the steering column apart. It is not going to be easy to reach, being pretty much at the firewall.
Starting from the top end of the steering shaft - there is a splined joint at the bottom end of that shaft, then an upper universal joint, then the intermediate shaft, and finally another universal type joint that is beyond the firewall, right on the top of the steering rack assembly.
The intermdiate shaft is keyed to the universal joint with a flat section on the shaft, not with splines. This is clamped in place with a bolt - and that section is what I think you maybve have pulled apart. The intermediate shaft seems to bolt to the firewall, from the drivers side, not the engine side.
If you need more space to work on this, you can remove the drivers seat. Thats what I do when I have to work that far under the dashboard.
Good Luck working down there.
