Grand Am Rear Brakes

Rear brakes on my 1997 Grand Am with ABS, engage and lock up before my front brakes. I have replaced rear brakes, adjusters and had drums surfaced. I also have replaced front brake hoses and bled brake system many times. If anybody can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Grand Am Rear Brakes

Welcome to AF.

Have you replaced the rear wheel cylinders ?
What about the front brakes ??

But it sounds like you could have a bad proportioning valve.

Rear brake lock ups are a typical problem for the 91-97, 98 models.
Can be a real PITA to track down too.

Try a search in the forums, you will find this is a common problem.

Just dont bring up threads that are older then 3 months.

Hope that helps.

Re: Grand Am Rear Brakes

After replacing, front brakes pads, surfacing rotors, replaced front brake hoses, master cylinder with abs pump assembly (which would have porportioning valve) rear brake shoes and adjusters and turning drums and bleeding system countless times and different ways, we finally installed new drums and this seems to have corrected problem. Hope this holds up, with other posts that I have seen some repairs seem to be only a temporary fix.

Re: Grand Am Rear Brakes

Might help to get a higher end scan tool and see if the ABS modulator and proportioning valve are working properly and up to the proper PSI, around 1200.

Also your rear wheel cylinder may be weak/old.
Which under pressure would work easier then the front,
so the rear would grab or seem to work first.

Hope it works out!
