Camshaft break in lubricant?
Where can I find a good break in lubricant for a new set of non-vtec (if that makes a difference) camshafts? Thanks for any help.

They don't make a lubricant that will make your car break in faster - that's an oxymoron. Just use a good synthetic motor oil.

Ok, well maybe the more appropriate term then was "Engine assembly lubricant." It's something you put on the camshafts to prevent wear, etc. when you install new ones. Usually it comes with them i think, but mine didn't, any ideas?

My Skunk2s came with a thin coating of grease to prevent rust while in the package...but there was nothing included to treat the cams with before installation.-edit- Dammit...it's been a long time, but now I think I remember a small package of grease that you coat the camshaft with before installation...if I remember correctly, it was just grease, nothing special. |

The small tubes of lubricant that used to come with new camshafts was usually molybdenum disulfide in a paste form.
It was dark grey in color. Many years ago I obtained a large number of one ounce tubes of this lubricant made by E/M lubricants in Lafayette, Indiana from a camshaft manufacturer. I assemble a lot of motorcycle motors, and I am nearly out 20 years later. I could not track down E/M lubricants. However, Loctite makes the same thing. It is called Loctite Moly 50. I just purchased a 1 pound can from RS Hughes. I came across this discussion during my search and came back to share the information. It is not cheap. A one pound can cost $45.22 plus shipping. I guess that is why they put it in little one ounce tubes. |
