Clunk when braking in reverse

I noticed a subtle (but distinct) clunk that happens when I step on the brake while moving in reverse. It only happens the first time the car is put into reverse. For example, if I back up a few feet and brake, I hear the sound/clunk; if I then continue a few feet more in reverse and step on the brake, there is no sound/clunk.

To get the sound/clunk to return, I have to drive forward a few feet and stop; then, when I reverse a few feet, the clunk returns.

This clunk is very reproducible. Discs/pads on all four wheels were just replaced along with sway bar and right tie rod.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: Clunk when braking in reverse

My first guess based on my own experiences is to check the brake hardware, especially the bracket-to-knuckle bolts. It sound to me like you may have a loose one, or may be missing one.

Pull the wheel off and verify that you have 2 bolts that hold the caliper bracket to the knuckle, and then verify that you have 2 bolts holding the caliper to the bracket. Then make sure they are all tight. Rinse and repeat for each wheel of the car.

Re: Clunk when braking in reverse

My guess is the same as hoov's....something gone funky in the brake hardware. I have seen it happen plenty of times. My second guess if that fails is whats wrong with my car, Strut mount berings are seized up causing a noticable CLUNK when braking in reverse or turning in reverse....and only happens once after the car sits in the morning...rest of the day OK.
