Looking to buy a used turbo for a civic, not sure which to go with

Well the car we are working on is a 1990 civic hatch with a d16 vtec out of a 94 civic si. We're deffinatly turboing it. We are about to start collecting parts, so I figured a mitsubishi turbo would be great for this car. The motor is only 1.6 liters and puts out probably around 120 horses or so. At first I was thinking 14b but maybe thats over kill? Maybe a T-too small would be ideal? I'm not sure so I figured I would ask you guys before I go buying anything. Thanks.

I think the T-25 is a common turbo for hondas, IIRC.

I'm betting it's 120 crank, probably 80 to the wheels.

Re: Looking to buy a used turbo for a civic, not sure which to go with

A 1g bov should be fine right? Also a FMIC would be way overkill I think, besides lookin pretty. So I'm thinking about just going with a side mount intercooler. Would a DSM sidemount be good? Or should I shoot for something like a Supra? Thanks for any help.

I think a 14b should be fine, but I would just use what you can find. Maybe a 13g from a 1g auto? A DSM SMIC should do you fine as well and yes, a 1g BOV will be great.

Re: Looking to buy a used turbo for a civic, not sure which to go with

I know on my friends LSVtec (DOHC) a DSM exhaust mani will pretty much bolt right up with little moddification. I'm not sure if that is true for the motor you guys are building. But it may be something to check out as well as you may save some money. Also DSM 450cc injectors are very popular on turbo'ed hondas as well (they call them DSM blue tops or whatnot).

It aint even like that. Moneys pretty tight over here. I'm basically trying to build these 3 cars (eclipse, civic coupe, and civic hatch) before I move out. I'm going to try and move out next year.

Defiancy:

Thanks for the info. I'm going to take one of my manifolds and look at the simularities to see if it will work, if it will that will save alot of cash. Also will the 450cc injectors go right into the honda fuel rail you think? I guess I'll have to do some research on some honda forums.

Pretty sure for the 450CC injectors all you need to do is get some new gromets and do some minor modification to them to make them fit. But I am pretty sure for the most part they are a direct drop in.

Just a short How-To on the injectors:

http://www.homemadeturbo.com/tech_pr...ors/index.html (Great site by the way)

Edit: Trying to see if I can find anything on the d16 with a Mitsu mani. The motor my friend has is a b18.

http://www.d-series.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=8

Here is a forum on Forced induction D-series motors. Doesn't look like the Mitsu manifold will fit, but it looks like they make a multitude of high flow manifolds witht he Mitsu flange for turbos, for practically nothing.

Re: Looking to buy a used turbo for a civic, not sure which to go with

A t25 is a good match for a 1.6, but IMO, if you're going to go to the trouble to turbo the car you might as well make it a 14b. Still dirt cheap and quick spooling, but an EVO16g will be a direct drop in if you decide to upgrade down the road. And a 20g will bolt on with just a LICP change. Seems like a better investment for future upgradeability.

Re: Looking to buy a used turbo for a civic, not sure which to go with

I know that if I use a 14b I will need a j-pipe (or as I call it the "donkey dick"). What is the outlet like on a t25? Does it need a donkey dick?

No donkey wang, if I remember correctly it has a 90 degree outlet cast into it facing the same way as the compressor inlet.

Re: Looking to buy a used turbo for a civic, not sure which to go with

i've seen a few civics here in MN that do go the mitsu turbo route (14b, 16g) and do get a decent amount of power without a tune. i would suggest both turbos would be great. i think at the wheel with correct tuning with the 14b or the 16g, im pretty sure you'll get around the 160 wheel or 170 wheel
