Should I just chalk it up as a lost?
I just bought a 2000 Grand AM SE1 Coupe with 115,000 miles from an auction. There is a loud front end noise when accelerating between 3000 and 4000 RPM. The noise also occurs when the engine is reved up in neutral between 3k and 4k RPM. There is also a slight front end knocking when stopped at a light or while sitting in park. The oil is dirty but not milky. No obvious white smoke from tail pipe, but it does seem to smoke slighty if I hold a sheet of paper at the tailpipe and appears to have water beyond expected condensation that drips from tailpipe. I paid $2,400, do you think it is worth further investment or should I just resell it at an auction and cut my loses?

Re: Should I just chalk it up as a lost?
Unfortunately, I think you are a victim of piston slap that is causing the noise you are indicating. If you intend to keep the car you may need to rebuild the engine or replace the engine all together. A 2000 is worth more than 2400 and if you replace or repair the engine you can probably get more for it if you sell it or you can always drive it. I would estimate you can probably replace the engine for about $1800. If you do the work yourself you can get by for around $1000.

I would agree with GTP Dad riggaman, sounds like you'll need a motor or a rebuild.

Thats ok , this time... lol - since your new and all
![]() It can be confusing where to post, though it realy doesnt matter someone gets to most all questions asap. Also you might be able to find a used engine with low miles for cheaper then a rebuild . Good Luck
