Problem with idling

My girlfriends 98 XJ has been having a problem. It will start, but then just dies. It will only stay running if you keep your foot on the gas. It only does this when the engine has not ran for a while. Does not do it after warmed up. I have also figured out that after getting to start if I slowly release the accelerator it will stay idling. But it sputter for a while after you start to drive. She has told me it has even died while driving right after start up. We have had this problem before but only in the winter when very cold. Now it it doing it even when it is 90 outside. Took it to a mechanic twice and he found no problem. But he tested it after it was already warm. Anyone got any ideas?

Re: Problem with idling

hmm... my 1st idea would be to SEARCH.
I guarantee you that this kind of issue has been covered many times over..

There are many ideas, few can see them, but, how about the- IAC, CPS, TPS, spark plugs/wires, distributor, fuel pump, gas cap... just to get started.

You know what? How about telling us what you have done.

I'm not being rude or mean, just direct and honest.

~Good Luck
