Steering Whine is Worse Now

Feels like forever since I've been on the forum (no internet at the new house).
My truck has been making noise when turning left for a little while now, but it recently got worse. The noise sounds/feels similar to wipers sreeching on a dry windshield, or rubbing your hand accross glass til it squeaks. I would assume it needs grease somewhere, but I have greased all 11 zerk fittings according to my Chilton manual. The dealer replaced my intermediate shaft and the sound continues(but clunk is gone). Any Ideas?

Thanks,
Jeb

OH,...also when turning left, my belt squeaks about once every revolution so I figure maybe I should change it? All of my symptoms seem to occur more frequently when the truck is hot.

Re: Steering Whine is Worse Now

Re: Steering Whine is Worse Now

Hmmmi had the same problem with my 2002 . first they replace the intermediate shaft and the clunk went away. Anyways when i was turning the wheel it would making a whine noise, only at slow speeds though(then again maybe it was there at all speed). Anyways they fix something. I'll have to pull the work order to check..

Re: Steering Whine is Worse Now

it is the belt. my 2004 did it when it got cold out. it sounded like the steering pump was going to fly out of the truck. the dealer was Johny on the spot with fixing it, the truck was still brand spanking new with a 1000 miles on it. thay told me to leave it over night i drove it around there lot squealing and thay made a opening. put a new belt on it and lubed the tensioner. it seems thay have had a lot of problems with belts and tensions.

I had this exact same problem with my 04. Brought it in for that and something else but they were unable to recreate the noise which is because it only happened after the truck warmed up. Unfortunately, I just passed 36000 miles two days ago so the warranty is up, but would they still fix it because its a problem that I brought it in for before the warranty was up? I have a feeling that it is not the belt in my case because I had that replaced maybe 2 months ago.

Re: Steering Whine is Worse Now

I doubt they fix it now that your warranty is up. Seems like bs considering you tried to have them fix it while it was still under warranty. If I were you I'd try making them fix it anyway. How many miles over 36,000 are you? The worse thing they can tell you is they won't cover it under warranty. But even then I'd argue the point that you have been trying to get them to fix it (while under warranty).

Re: Steering Whine is Worse Now

I think the whine is pretty standard in these trucks. I know mine whines when the truck is not moving and I am turning the stering wheel. The biggest problem is that these pumps are under powered. They are too week for these truck setup and weight. If I were you, I would save up the money and upgrade to a better pump and gear box.
