95 88 royale died at 45 mph

Last week I was driving my daughters car, 95 88 royale. I noticed after about a mile the car had a knocking noise, Though it wasnt really loud enough to be considered a knock, but steady. I had checked the water and oil before i left. It wasnt running hot or anything.I decided whatever it was wasnt good, so turned around and headed home. Course every stoplight had to turn red on me and i noticed at every light the engine sounded like it was bogging down just kinda having a lower rougher idle than when in motion. Drove about a mile down the road, was going 45mph by then and the engine just died. Tried to restart but all it would do is just click, wont even try to turn over. Had it towed home and here it sits. Have went out everyday since to see if it would do more than click, but thats it. Now on reading these forums, I can tell ya, that all the lights including the security light, and the buzzer comes on normally and turn off normally. It did have a water leak that appeared about 2 weeks before this, but it wasnt inside the engine. I could see that it was leaking just behind the plugs and to the right of the alternator belt, I stopped filling the overflow just to see if it still leaked. And it didnt. But the radiator was holding all its coolant. Didnt lose a drop in the week i stopped filling the bottle. Not sure if the leak is the water pump or not as I cant seem to find a diagram of the 3800 engine anywhere. But can a locked up water pump kill it while in motion? Im thinking the worst like I threw a rod or something but there was no sound whatsoever when it died, and no fluids of any kind on the ground. I tried to jump it in case it was the alternator, after about 20 mins I gave up and had it towed home. The guy that towed it tried to start it and it tried once to turn over but that was it. 6 months ago I had the head gasket replaced and thanks to these forums the plenum. And the car ran great until it died.

A water pump will not cause an engine to stall. You need to check battery voltage first. It should be 12.67 fully charged. If that checks ok, remove the negative cable from the battery first, then the positive. Check both cables for corrosion under the insulation and between the cables. Once all these have been inspected & cleaned, install the positive cable and then the negative cable & tighten. Try to start it again and if it still will not turn over, remove all the spark plugs and see if it will turn over. Let us know what you find!
