fuel pump?

I think my fuel pump on my truck died. here is some history.

For the last month or so, when i'd go out to start the truck in the morning, or if it had set for awhile(over 30 min). The truck would not start right up, engine turned over perfect just wont fire. I'd turn the key, hear the pump, try to start nothing, if i turned the key back and then tried again would start fine.

Well on saturday after driving for over 100 miles i pulled in the drive to check the mail, truck died. got back in tried to start nothing. Called a fried and we moved it up the drive way, would turn the key and would not hear the pump, started to do some checking acording to my manual. well the prime check passed, and could hear the relay clicking. Next says to remove the connect at pump and check there. Is there anyway to check this WITHOUT dropping the tank/removing the bed?

Also after a while i tried again and the pump would hump, fire up and die instantly...un hooked the fuel line after filter, and no gas comes out with key on,(no pump sound either). So i'm guessing this is pretty much either the pump, or the connecter back there....anything else i can check before moving the bed to check the pump connector?

Thanks in advance

Re: fuel pump?

What's the info on your truck? (Model, year, engine...) From what you've described so far, it sounds like you're on the right track.

Re: fuel pump?

On the new body styles, the fuel pump harness is directly above the fuel tank. Unless you've got really small arms, the tank will have to come down, at least partially to access the connector. Here's something to try, though. Not exactly service information diagnostic material, but if you have a decent size hammer or rubber/plastic mallet, you can have somebody crank the engine for you while you give the fuel tank some persuasion with the hammer near the center/bottom area. If the pump starts running again, you've temporarily freed up a stalled fuel pump, which would indicate the fuel pump is indeed failed.

Re: fuel pump?

There were certian years (sorry cannot remmeber witch) that gm had problems with the pigtail that pluged in to the pump melting and causing a bad connection.
