1998 Plymouth Gr. Voyager - Stalling

Long time lurker, First time poster...

I have long read these forums, and found a lot of good advice on them. I would like to take a moment to thank those who spend the time replying to the various problems that are posted on this board, providing helpful advice to those of us who know just enough to be dangerous.

At any rate...My 98 Grand Voyager was stalling...and I could NOT figure out why. It would stall as I approached stops, and usually only after it had been running for a while...(>40 miles or so).

After reading this forum, I had narrowed it down to either the Idle Air Control Valve, or the Catalytic Converter...

I was bummed because those parts are $80 and $300+, respectively. I'm happy to report that I was able to find the actual problem, and it was a cheap fix.

My air filter was full of twigs, leaves, sand, etc...and I realized that I neglected to replace it the last time I was supposed to. That filter was probably over a year old, and was just plain clogged up. Saw a big performance boost in my horsepower with a clean filter in place!!!

Just wanted to share my experience, so that others can benefit as I have from this forum.

Welcome to the Forum. Thanks for admitting your mistake. This is a reminder to all of the importance of keeping up with basic maintenance.

I'll have to admit I don't change air filters at the prescibed mileage. Here in CA we have to get our cars smog tested every other year. I've gotten into the habit of changing the air filter and spark plugs (except platinums) on all my cars in prep for the test. Seems to work well for me and is easy to remember. Another thing that works for me is to go crazy with a label maker. Just about any maintenance I perform I'll print the date and/or mileage on a label and stick it on the frame in front of the radiator. It's an easy ready reference. If you don't want to clutter up that area, you could put the labels on the back side of the tire jack cover. Everybody needs to come up with a system for remembering when to change what.

that seems strange unless you had a little critter in there making a nest . I have looked at ours at about 25000 mile intervals and it is barely dirty then . If you do a lot of driving in dusty areas then I could see it .

Re: 1998 Plymouth Gr. Voyager - Stalling

Quick update...

While driving around the other day...to my chagrin...it stalled on me again!

I did a quick check of the air filter again just to make sure, and it was clean. When I went to put the hose from the valve cover back to the air cleaner, it broke in 2 pieces right in my hand. I noticed that there was a small crack in it right at the valve cover. I went to autozone, and got a new section of hose, and replaced it...

Drove to Austin this weekend, and she was running like a champ. No stalls. I'll continue to monitor it closely, though...I'm sure I've not seen the end of this issue.

Re: 1998 Plymouth Gr. Voyager - Stalling

I have the same problem with my 1993 Plymouth Voyager, but only after ~200..300km on a highway! Then when I stop to a traffic lights, engine stalls. I start it again but would not hold the idle! No "Check Engine" codes.. After a while everything is normal. Never had this problem city driving or short trips. But I have it several times on long trips so I know is there and could become worse!
triplethreattt, I still have to find my crack in a vacuum hose if that is a fix.
Let's keep posting..

Thanks All.
