Hollowing out Cats...Pros and cons?

I have a 1993 cvpi and i was wondering how my car would react if i hollowed out the catalytic converters.I cant tell for sure but it seems that a stronger air flow should be coming out my pipes so one of my cats could be clogged.I know all about the laws and in my county, emissions are not required.....yet,but if i did hollow them out, would i see a dramatic increase in HP?? Thanx for ur help

you would be better off just removing it if your going to hollow it out. and yes he increased air flow will help your performance and mileage slightly but remember to follow emissions laws (that your country may put into effect)
or invest in a high flow converter.
talk to a local scrap dealer as well if you go the route of removing your cat, a cat here that isnt 100% clogged goes for about 100 bucks because of the precious metals inside.

removing your cats might set off the check engine light and you honestly might not be able to tell any difference in hp. plus even with no emission law usually if your car came with it it has to be there.

Georgia is in the United Stated, as are it's counties. Every heard of federal emissions laws?

If you do hollow the converters make sure you get it all. If you don't have them completely free of material they will continue to break up inside and will plug up your mufflers. If that happens whatever you gained will be lost and you'll be out the price of 2 mufflers.

Re: Hollowing out Cats...Pros and cons?

It sounds tempting to take the cats off...don't do it.
1. Your exhaust will stink...enough so that a keen police officer can tell that you don't have cats.
2. Excessive noise. The cats supress noise levels more than you might think....but hey if you wanna make a lot of noise run straight-pipes from the mainfolds back. The drone will be killer around 50-60 mph; forget about listening to your radio.

If your cats are plugged get a good aftermarket high-flow replacement. Magnaflow makes pretty good replacements although they won't be direct bolt-ons.
