for someone new to turbo cars planing to go with a turbo set up on a b16.
what would be a good turbo to go with if there trying to run low-mid 12's. garrett t36? |

first thing you need to do is speak w/ a tuner, then learn to read compressor maps.
then you need to learn that engines are built completely differently to handle boost as opposed to all motor... Much too general of a question to be asking if you dont know anything about turbo setups. |

Hrm... not counting the driver's ability (or lack thereof) as the case may be... I've got $20 on a blown first engine... j/k lol
Nah, seriously, even if it's a stock engine, and you're just "tossing" the boost on it, it's still a good idea to learn about building engines for boost. Helps to teach you the mechanical limits under boosted applications, which are SERIOUSLY different than N/A, as I"m sure you're aware frodo. |

i think that if you're new to turbo's, before you do anything, like ask what tubo to use, you need to do some reading so that you get a basic understanding about how they work and different types of set-ups…there’s a wealth of information on this forum and others about turbo B16’s, the set-ups people used, and what power they got

If you plan on running a large amount of boost I'd go with a B18a over a B16, B16 compression is fairly high to push alot of boost, if you do go with the B16 you might want to do some of the internals too.

Anyone ever mess with the IHI turbos from the Ford Probes? Thinking about getting another B18A1 and build it for one of those little turbos(I can get one pretty easy

Tony, get a Turbo from a Mazda 626 it's the same thing, and easier to find... best one is a IHI RB6, It's good for up to 14-16PSI on a 2.0L engine. (safely). It's exactly the one that got left behind when someone decided to greet my friend's garage w/ a crowbar to the window... most of my shit was just stolen.. I'm kinda sour about that, and I have a good idea who did it... the 'gauge is screaming for some target practice.

Yea, I knew they were the same thing, I have a friend that races Probes and has an extra laying around that I could get rebuilt. Heard good things from them for their quick spooling, but I won't run that much boost...seen them spit the fins out too much.

I had originally planned on using mine on a D16ZC (DOHC) running ~10-12psi max... 6PSI nominal... last probe I drove w/ a turbo was a field enduro car, always spooled about 14-16PSI, ran it over 3k miles @ high rev's and never had a problem w/ the turbo... engine on the other hand... heh.

im going with a dsm turbo possibly on a z6 (new b series options have just become available) and ill probably go around 10-11 psi, or whatever gets me to 220. Then later build with forged internals and go for 15-17.

Ive seen a few of them at the track spin the fins out of it, but thats possibly because of the guy who builds them....he can't keep any turbo car together. Just was thinking about it since I can get the turbo easy, just gotta get a manifold and adapter plate(and all the fun little extras)...I'm not looking for huge numbers out of it, just a little extra horsepower for a little amount of money

HF manifold works perfect... I even think I have one laying around, if you're using a D series for the build. I don't have an adapter plate, that one's up to you... you can make them pretty easy tho.
Lemme know if you want that mani, I'll let you know the price + shipping for it. |
