WIP: Toyota Celica GT4 1991 - Carlos Sainz

After the trials and tribulations of my Gulf Porsche this one is going to be nice and simple. I always did like this car ever since I saw Sainz flying through Dalby Forest during the GB Rally of '91.

The kit is based on the road version of the Celica from Tamiya with the Studio 27 transkit. This time I WILL NOT BE OPENING ANY DOORS WHATSOEVER!!!!!

So off we go again...

This is a hefty transkit consisting of white metal, decals, etch and resin parts as you can see...

There is a fair bit of alteration needed on the shell and this is how it looks out of the box...

The sills, front bumper, mud flaps, rear number plate all need removing and two holes need putting into the roof along with a new fuel flap.

first up and off with the front bumper...

and on with the new one, hasegawa's photo etch saw used for this...

then these sills need to be removed...

and the number plate too...

as for the floor plan then the floor is completely covered with a white metal piece and these four pins need to come out...

to look like this

this is probably going to be the heaviest 'plastic' kit I've ever built.

more to come soon!

I'll be watching this build up for tips as I have the same model sat in my loft.Nice start on removing the bumper and other bits.I'd thought about spraying the red sections instead of using the decals for a better finish. What's your thoughts on this Sean?

Looking forward to following along on this.

Painting the red sounds like a good idea.

Hello Sean, and all,

Wow this will be the WIP to follow in the next weeks !
I have this kit/TK too (not surprised ? ) and will enjoy to see how you lead this build.

I also ever thought to paint the red instead of using decals.

I will love to see one of your awesome build this time about a car I know !

Re: WIP: Toyota Celica GT4 1991 - Carlos Sainz

thanks guys,

really undecided about the decals or paint problem. If it was just plain red and white I would definately spray however there is a very thin almost pin stripe black line around the red which will be too small to trim off and place on the car seperately... I would prefer to spray but not sure how I would get the black line on neatly enough if I do.

Re: WIP: Toyota Celica GT4 1991 - Carlos Sainz

more progress...

removed the old number plate and surround...

and added the new white metal one...

new metal sills on...

for the roof vents two holes were needed in the roof, I measured these out using the etch pieces as templates

and for a little extra detail I added a little mesh underneath the opening first...

one done...

and them both in place...

the jury is still out on whether or not to spray the red, anyone any suggestions - yes the finish would be far superior spraying it, but what about that pesky little black pin stripe around the edge?

I LOVE that roof vent detail!!
Your adding the netting is a great added touch

I can see a mold line over the drivers door/roof? I am sure you know it but just in case.... (Lesson learned from Gio )

You could also mask the black pinstipe? or even cut it from the decal and use just the pinstripe as a decal? Just thinking out loud

Re: WIP: Toyota Celica GT4 1991 - Carlos Sainz

This looks like it will turn out as good as that gorgeous 917!! Looking forward to watching this one taking shape!

As to the black stripe problem, Hannants stock various widths of stripes done by Microscale, eg 1/64th inch wide;

http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=MSPS1642

or 1/32;

http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=MSPS1322
If you go to their homepage, select Microscale in the drop down Manufacturers search box & put 'stripes black' in the keyword search field it'll show all the available thicknesses.

Alternatively, you could get a sheet of clear decal & draw the black stripe on with a permananet OHP pen & a ruler & apply like a normal decal?

Re: WIP: Toyota Celica GT4 1991 - Carlos Sainz

I was also going to suggest the Microscale stripes from Hannants.I've used them before on aircraft models and they are very good. The vents look really good and the netting below them is a nice addition.

Re: WIP: Toyota Celica GT4 1991 - Carlos Sainz

Yummy, I am really looking forward to this build. I too remember Sainz in this car---although I never saw him drive it (my first RAC was 98)---and how very cool it was. A few years later a friend of mine bought the next generation Celica (T180) real car and I was horrified how ugly it was... although that has now grown on me too.
