Silly question here, but where do you buy these more powerful engines at? Also, from my reading it sounds like the B16 is the more popular for a 4th gen hatch... Is this an item I find at a junkyard? If so which car(s). How much do engines weigh anyway? I take it I will need a garage and a crank pulley? to put it in there and I'll have to swap out my tranny to handle the better engine as well.. lol sorry for the noob style. I have a 1990 DX Hatch 5 Speed by the way (D15B2). Could this engine beat a 2nd Gen Legend coupe 6-speed w/ a type II engine? just curious |

Re: NOOB 101; Where do you go to buy engines/ trannies for swaps etc...
Ok, the b16a is a jdm engine. So no you wont find it in a junkyard ANYWHERE..unless you pull a b16a3 from a del sol vtec (not the si), which youll find once in your lifetime in a junkyard. The engine will weigh a little bit more but its nothing that you will really notice too much at all. You wont need a crank pulley, I think your talking about an engine hoist? Your tranny wont bolt up to the engine at all so yes you will need that among other things. There are a multitude of links you can find simply by searching for "b16 swap" in these forums.
There are also tons of links for importers to get the engine. But I hear very good things about www.hmotorsonline.com and I was going to use them but they didnt carry the particular engine I was in need of (d16z6 is domestic, not jdm :P) and no.. i would think that the legend could take the d15b2..specially not the 6spd type 2

What kind of MPG does a fully swapped b16 get anyway? I mean if you drove it one tank like an old man and the next tank you pushed the hell out of it Id be okay with. I'm mainly looking for a good compromise... Is this possible? or am I looking at using this DX as a daily driver and should I look for a project car? hmm? not sure... |

Re: NOOB 101; Where do you go to buy engines/ trannies for swaps etc...
I'm having a difficult time searching because I keep finding info about speed and what not. I'm looking for a comparison of MPG comparisons from engine to engine if I did a swap. It would be nice to know hard driving vs old man driving for each engine as well, but I doubht this info is even available.
I just realized what I would want to do. I want an engine that kicks the D15B2's ass (the one I currently have), but is not the fastest or most sought after. I also don't want to spend an arm and a leg especially because this would be my first swap. I'm mainly wanting to get my hands dirty (no pun) and put in an engine. I also am okay to lose up to 10 MPG if the engine kicked ass. I currently get about 40 in my DX 90 Hatch 5 speed and 30 would still be great if the car had some balls... Once I get the experience, I will look into the more complex and expensive engines (more popular) Budget swap? I guess Thanks too the help is appreciated. |

Re: NOOB 101; Where do you go to buy engines/ trannies for swaps etc...
Go for a b18a/b. its non vtec but will have alot more torque than your setup and can be found very easily for cheap. Also, since its a b-series if you ever decide that it just idnt enough "oomph" you could easily swap a b16 or b18c in with minimal changes like the ecu and 4 vtec wires.
As far as mpg goes, my b16 crx with no ac at one point got 20-24mpg but after getting the wiring straightened out and with a little highway driving it hit 31 mpg every tank for about 10 tanks till I sold it..and I drove it like a bat out of hell. Now to compare, my hatch, with a d15b7 (from a 92-95 dx) has 10 more hp than yours in the 5g civic, but mine is being run on the stock dpfi injection so im gonna assume that 10hp is totally negated. I get 29-31 almost all city, with the ac on at all times. The crx never had ac. So really, I dont know what it gets all highway right now, Ive driven it a few hundred miles on the highway but it was when I got it and didnt know whether the tank was full or not, so I had no way to calculate it. But I guess at least im not buying premium.

One of the most useful swap posts right there. Like Frodo said, you can pick up a B18A/B for fairly cheap, and they are pretty easy swaps. I'm currently in the middle of swapping a B18A1(from a 90-91 Integra) in my hatch, after its been sitting for about 4 yrs being neglected. I picked up a Motor mount kit off ebay for like $125 I think and the motor dropped in perfect. After the mounts got here, I found out they were Yonaka mounts still in the factory box unopened...they are $350 mounts. I still have to go and run the wires for the MPFI swap, and a few other things here and there, and it will be time for the moment of truth.

Yea, the whole thread is a good read. I just narrowed it down to Kris's post on Engine swaps...I have it bookmarked

Re: NOOB 101; Where do you go to buy engines/ trannies for swaps etc...
the b16's came from jdm (japanese domestic market) crx's and civics and integras. The b18c1 comes from usdm integra gsr's and then theres the c5 which is in the type-r integra.
