i have a 2001 monte carlo ss with 50,000 miles. In the last few months the service vehicle soon message light comes on and will reset if you turn the car off and restart. this has happened 5 times. in sept of 05 gm issued a recall on the catalyic converter. last week the car had very poor acceleration and when I would rev the motor to 4000rpm it would sputter/ miss out etc etc. I called the dealer and he said it was probably the converter. each time the light came on and off i took the car to an auto part store they checked for codes and NO codes have shown up at all. They dealer replaced the converter at no charge and the car ran like its supposed to. 2 days after the converter was replaced the service vehicle soon message appeared again. i check for codes and nothing again. the dealer could not find any codes either. the car seems to be running ok but i cant figure out what is causing the service vehicle soon message to come on.. the vehicle is well taken care of. Anyone having the same problem or can help me out with this one please email me at [email protected] I called the dealer today and offered to check for codes at no cost. Help Help Help...Thanks Jim

Re: 2001 monte carlo SS service vehicle soon message HELP
I have a 96 monte carlo and the same thing happened to me. I finally brought it to advance auto parts and left it running with the light on. That is the only way they can get the code if it keeps turning off on you. It was an O2 sensor that was the problem. I changed it and everything is fine now. The old O2 sensor was killing my gas millage too. If it turns on take it to advance auto parts or an autozone and leave it running so they can check the code.

Re: 2001 monte carlo SS service vehicle soon message HELP
The Service Vehicle Soon message came on again I took it to Advance Auto Parts they hooked up there computer NO CODE. I took to the Dealer a week later and they checked for all codes at no charge and they couldnt find anything. Sorry I did write in early post that it was the Service Engine. Its not its Service Vehicle Soon Message. Still the car runs great. I called another dealer and their service manager said its more of a body/frame message and has nothing to do with the engine. If anyone has experienced this please replay back.
Thanks Jim |

Re: 2001 monte carlo SS service vehicle soon message HELP
jimchevytk, the service vehicle soon light is different from the check engine light. The check engine light is the one that will come on when an OBDII fault code is stored that can be pulled by AZ and Advance.
According to the owners manual for an 03 model, the service vehicle soon lamp indicates an engine related problem that may or may not affect performance. It states to consult a qualified dealership for necessary repairs to maintain top vehicle performance. It appears that this indicator light is independent of the MIL(Malfuncion Indicator Lamp)/Check Engine light. I wish I had more specific info for you, but check your owners manual and see if your's has better, less cryptic info.
