Stuck in Park

I have an AOD in a 91 convertible. It is a 5.0 L engine. My shift selector is stuck in park. Linkages are all connected. Transmission is relatively new with no prior signs of shifting problems during operation. Fluid levels are good. Have not checked the sensor for the brake pedal depression. The selector button feels like it is ok. Spring has tension and it moves slightly. Just can't get it to move all the way into the shifting position. Anyone had this trouble before? I looked at my manual and it looks like the sensor is on the steering column. I'll be checking that tonight.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Has your brake pedal recently been depressed all the way to the floor board? I have a '91 5.0 auto 'vert and I had that problem once when my brakes failed and the brake pedal hit the floor board. There is an electical connection located on the brake pedal assmebly that disconnected when the brake pedal hit the floor. It seems to be a safety measure and I couldn't get it into gear until I reconnected the electric wiring harness.

Both the sensor on the pedal and on the steering column seem to be connected sufficiently. I did not check them with a meter to see if they were actually working or not. Thanks for the suggestion...I think it is time to start disassembling things.

Ok, I can do a neutral start and drive the car anywhere I want and it drives and shifts fine. But, if I put it in P I cannot get it out without performing the neutral starting procedure. All the fuses looked ok and as I said before, it looks like the wiring at the brake pedal is in tact. Is it time to get out my meter and start checking lines? This car has had some electrical/sensors issues in the past. The check engine light goes on and off for no apparent reason and the tach jumps around violently at times without respect to the engine. Any suggestions?
