Is the bypass worth the trouble?

I just recieved my AEM Bypass Valve in the mail. But after reading the directions, I don't know if i want to do the installation of it.

I have to cut the pipe to add it in. Can you engine guru's help me out?

Should I install it? Does it really work? HELP PLEASE.

Also, I live in Charleston, SC. For those of you who don't know the area, it is below sea level so we get a stable amount of flooding year round. Should I go through the head ache to save my engine?

What is gonna happen to the engine if water gets sucked up into it?

Hey,

Sport Compact Car did a test of a bypass valve a while back (here)

Here is what they said would happen to the engine...

Quote:
OK, so what's the big deal? Think about what happens next. Say you have a 2.0-liter engine, so each cylinder displaces 500cc. If just one of those cylinders sucked in just 100cc of water (100cc is only 5 percent of what's in a 2-liter bottle, if you are having problems thinking metrically) the end would be very, very near.If this engine has 10.0:1 compression, for example, the combustion chamber would be reduced to just 55.5cc when the piston is at top dead center. As the piston goes up the compression stroke with 100cc of water in the cylinder, impending doom is near. Air will happily compress as the piston moves up, but water will not. As soon as the combustion chamber is reduced to 100cc, the piston will stop. No matter what. And then the engine will stop... if you are lucky.
I say use the valve, save your engine

it would be kinda hard to argue with a car maganize, but maybe theyre saying it to help profits(just like the government enforced bike helmet law... wonder who's gettin rich off that). anyways, everyone ive ever talked to said its useless. the only way your intake will actually suck up water is if the filter is submerged. so you pretty much have to be driving through a lake or a 2ft deep puddle. and then it also hurts airflow and therefore performance.

but if you still wanted to put it in, why would you have to cut your intake?? the one you showed before in your sig was a two piece cai.

What would you rather do?
Cut your $200 intake,
or buy a new engine.
Seems like a pretty easy answer to me.

Also I remember reading that article in Sport Compact Car. They installed it on an NSX and showed a picture of the water making it halfway up the pipe and then stopping, so it does really work. If you think about it its pretty simple how it works although I don't know how to put it into words.

He said there's lots of flooding where he lives.

The intake pipes are 2 different sizes. It goes from a smaller pipe leaving the throttle body to a bigger one heading to the filter.

I would have to cut the put leading out of the engine.

Thanks for all the help ya'll. I guess i need to get out the hack saw.

Every AEM CAI that I have ever seen comes in 2 parts.

I got it from modacar.com

The short ram is a different shaped pipe.

I know freed0mfist had to cut his intake out to put in the same cai as yours, he fucked up his finger, but said it wasnt too difficult.

So the biblical scholars mis-translated the Hebrew word for "young woman" into the Greek word for "virgin," which was a pretty easy mistake to make, since there is only a subtle difference in the spelling. But back then it was the "virgin" that caught people's attention. It's not every day a virgin conceives and bears a son. So you keep that for a couple of hundred years, and the nexy thing you know, you have the Roman Catholic church.

If you hydrolock the engine does that mean it's dead forever? Or that it just has to be rebuilt? I only know that it's bad to get water in the engine, but i'm not sure why.

lol someone made up hydrolocking ur engine cause I sure as hell know it is impossible to lock an engine from water unless u drive throuhg a damn river or something. Yes u can stall out maybe get water running in ur intake ports and cylinders and maybe damage some sensors get some water in ur oil but hydro locking? It is expensive to have the water cleaned out, is that wat ur refering to though, getting water in ur engine? cause the only was I could see ur engine lockin would be if u got water in ur oil and it thinned it out so the piston seized in the cylinder but that would take time.. I have also asked about this and my boss looked at my funny... but yes I think aem's bypass valve is a good idea, only cause I got water in my engine before, lol.
