Re: 95 wagon no start

Give more info.
The cars does not start, but what DOES it do? Nothing happens when the key is turned? It cranks but won't start? Cranks slowly? Just clicks? Do the headlights and wipers work? Does it have gas?
Don't worry about getting trouble codes unless the check engine light is on.... and don't forget that the check engine light is supposed to be on when you are starting the car... doesn't shut off til it is running... so if that is why you are thinking you need to check the codes then disregard it for now

Try and give a description of what is actually happening.

Re: 95 wagon no start

I very highly doubt trouble with the fuel filter. I would investigate the timing belt further. Be sure to check the timing belt behind the plastic cover, not the accessory belt for the alternator and other accessories.

A simple way to do this is to remove the oil cap and look inside while someone cranks the engine. If you see moving parts, the timing belt is probably ok... unless it jumped. If nothing moves... timing belt is broken.

Suspect the timing belt even more if it hasn't been changed in a long time or has never been changed.

How was spark verified?

Re: 95 wagon no start

You will get spark if the belt has merely slipped and is "out of time" ...but not broken. I would suggest getting a Haynes manual and looking at the belting timing/installation section. It is pretty easy to check and make sure the camshaft is/isn't still "in time" with the crankshaft ... this will put to rest the question of whether the timing belt has slipped or not.

Just because a fuel pump makes noise ... does not mean it is actually pumping. Being very careful, wrap a small screwdriver with a shop rag and depress the Schrader valve on the fuel rail ... this will indicate fuel pressure at the injectors.
