95 series 1 computer+modules question

im swapping 3.8 sc engine into my alero but i was wondering what modules are in the riviera so i know which module to get and not get. im thinking about maybe making it a little easier to get the speedometer cluster/gauge cluster though im really not sure.

Re: 95 series 1 computer+modules question

try asking here- rivperformance.com
but most people dont swap a series 1 engine  the series II is cheaper and easier to find

Re: 95 series 1 computer+modules question

Ok, one thing for sure, you will need the original ECM & prom from the donor car. You cannot mismatch engine & Trans control with any other ECM/PCM. They are all unique in how & what they control. In addition, the wiring harness is a dedicated part of the combination. You will need both!

Re: 95 series 1 computer+modules question

so which one is the ecm and pcm then. which numbers would show me which ones was which on is there big size difference. i did take out all the modules out of the junkyard and iirc 1 of them was really big one fit in the palm of your hand one was like 3 inches smaller than the big one.

Re: 95 series 1 computer+modules question

From your original post, it was not clear what your intentions were when changing engines or PCM’s, so I will try to clarify this a little more.

If you have a 95 Series I PA (L67) engine/trans and a 95 Series I (L67) Riviera, the PCM should be compatible. They both carry a Part #16183247 PCM.

What would not be compatible, is an OBD I or OBD II PCM or different year PCM for the Series I or Series II engine. The PCM wiring pin-outs and programming are different for every year from 92-95. All 96 & newer models are OBD II, and not compatible with any of the earlier years!

Re: 95 series 1 computer+modules question

Wait a minute! Let’s not confuse the PCM/ECM with the ECBM!

First, the earlier computer controlled cars (85-95) used an Engine Control Module (ECM) that was located inside the car on the passenger side, behind or above the kick panel. These units were fitted with an internal PROM or chip to control engine functions then later were used to control the engine and transmission.

As the computer systems progressed, the Power Train Control Module (PCM) replaced the ECM on some 95’s, then in 96 and newer cars, they all used a “PCM” (OBD II). These two similar computers perform some of the same functions, only the PCM is much more sophisticated and does not contain a replaceable prom.

Now, you also have the Electronic Brake Control Module (ECBM) that is a different animal all together. The ECBM is used to control the ABS brake system. Usually the ECBM is a smaller box located near the firewall and under the power brake booster.

Finally, somewhere in the mid 90’s, they also installed a Body Control Module (BCM), however it is usually located under the dash or under the seat.

I hope this helps eliminate some of the confusion.

it says ecm on it with the numbers 3247 and ISO-90001:2000 and SL1104 whatever that means. it likes 9 inches big that was under the passenger side dash. the little one that i pulled out i stored in the car because i didnt know what it was. so to state this again i do have the ecm and pcm now i just need the wiring harness.

Think of the ECM/PCM as the same part, just different terminology used to describe the computer! In addition, notice how the last four numbers you found "3247" translate to the to the last numbers in Part #16183247. It sounds like you have the right ECM/PCM. Now all you need is the wiring harness to match the engine/tranny and ECM. Where did the other module come from, under the hood, or inside the car?

Sorry, I don't know enough about the gage cluster compatibility to comment on that.

Click Here for view of ECM/PCM

Click Here for view of AC Programmer

Are these the two modules you have?

BTW, I almost forgot the Body Control Module (BCM) that is a Part # 25646511 and also contains the Anti Theft controls.
