Gas Tank venting problem - 99 Taurus

I have a 1999 Taurus with a 24 valve engine. Recently, I have a lot of trouble filling my gas tank no matter how slow I try to pump the gas and no matter how I position the gas nozzle. The nozzle continually shuts off as if the tank is full. (I am positive the tank is empty and I never had this problem till the last couple months) I have to fill the tank very very slowly. Someone suggested that the gas tank vent is plugged, however I don't know where the vent tube is located. I was also told that it could possibly be a faulty "vent solenoid". I also do not know where that part is located or what part should be replaced first. Another person recommended that I replace the filler tube, but it does not appear to be damaged.

Any suggestions as to the problem and the location of the parts, especially the vent solenoid, would be greatly appreciated. I am also open to any other suggestions for this problem.

Thanks in advance!!!

Re: Gas Tank venting problem - 99 Taurus

My 99 24v has always been touchy in terms of gassing up, I can't run it at full volume unlike my others, 94 and 93... been that way since we bought it new, I'm pretty sure that along the way the design of this system, starting with earlier models, has been a source of refueling issues.. as far as venting, tanks don't vent directly to the atmosphere anymore, I think there's some sort of vapor recovery built into the filler pipe, supposed to prevent vapors from escaping as you fuel up.. if you're experiencing a major change in operation, possibly something has broken internally or failed??? I'll have to check my manual for any info, maybe another on here can help out in the meantime.

If the issue is in the evaporative emissions system, your 1999 Taurus should have a code set in the PCM for it. The emissions system is closely monitored by OBD-II cars and trucks.

found the vent siliondid or what i think its the vent silendoid and it is all rusted out and is this connected to the evap purge canister???

also came with this problem is the gas gauge does not go blow full untill i have 200-220 on it and the losest it goes know is 3/4s of a tank!!!!

could there be a vaccum holding the gauge and not alouing me to fill up because the car thinks that ist full?

Re: Gas Tank venting problem - 99 Taurus

My 98 has had the problem get worse over the past 6 months. At first it filled fast until the last two gallons. Now it has worked its way up to the last four gallons. Someone at work has a 99 that recently got new rear struts and helper springs for the suspension. It now sits almost two inches higher in the rear than my car does. I squeezed under my car with a half tank of gas and not jacking it up. Put a torpedo level on the filler tube where it runs horizontal for about a foot and a half to the tank. Sure enough, it is no longer running down hill into the tank. The bubble is just barely past the line closest to the tank. I think this might be the cause of these filler problems. I'm going to take a couple of blocks of wood with me the next time I need to fill up. I'll put them in front of the back tires and pull forward onto them to raise the back end up. That should be a good indicator if a sagging rear is the culprit.
