Re: 91 Lumina z34 Where is Crank Shaft Sensor
There are two cranksaft sensors on the 3.4. One that is installed behind the harmonic balancer and the other can be found on the back of the engine above the the oil pan bolt rail and just under the rear head. That one is the common one that goes bad, and is the critical one for the engine to run, thats the one your most likley looking for.
it can be difficult to get to on these engines, but it can be done without removing anything, but its hard. |

Re: 91 Lumina z34 Where is Crank Shaft Sensor
oh ic so why is there 2 sensors? and how do u get at it without removing anything like u said? and what is ur trick to getting at it by removing stuff? i looked under car is it the sensor by the driver side sticking side ways towards the wheels? or is that another sensor?
also was told cuz it cost me 900 bucks in the end to have it done on my other car u gotta remove the oil pan cuz the sensor breaks off as its a magnet and falls in the oil pan, is this true or false? so back to repairs how can i do it? i was told remove lower engine mounts the back 2 and engine tilts but what are ur experiences? |

Re: 91 Lumina z34 Where is Crank Shaft Sensor
You could get to it without removing anything, but like I said, its not easy. I have got to it once from the top and many times from the bottom. Removing the two rear cradle bolts and loosening the two front ones will also work too, as it will drop the rear of the engine down, giving you better access, but you have to be carful not to damage anything while tilting the engine this way. You can take to upper intake off and reach down in the back and get to it this way too, but you have to have long arms and are only working with your hands, no eyes to see whats going on - I've done it like this before too. Its tough on the 3.4s, as its very tight, but it can be done.
The sensor has a small 10mil(or 8mil? I don't remember)bolt on it to keep it there. Also, I have never heard or have seen of the sensor breaking apart and falling in the pan. It may be possible depending on what make of sensor is used, but I have never personally seen one. |
