ratchet/automatic shifters

How do automatic shifters or ratchet shifters work?
-and who makes the best? (I have heard B&M is the best)

well.. my friend has a Hurst Quarter Stick (rachet shifter) in his 70 Camaro Z28.

works great, just start in low and push it forward when you want to shift. it has a neutral safety lockout so you can accidently go into neutral... and more importantly Reverse.
