Shaking steering wheel problem

Me and my wife have a 98, she is the primary driver for the car. The car has a problem with shaking in the steering wheel when at highway speeds, 70 mph. We just recently took it to a shop that we got the tires from when we bought the car, had to have new tires put on when we purchased it. The people their said that it was a little out of balanced, so they balanced them and said that all of the shaking in the steering wheel might not be completely fixed. They said that it might be the tires that are causing the shaking and said that they can get us neon tires to put on the car. The tires on the car now are new Cooper tires, 3 months old. So I really don't see how the tires can be causing such a problem with shaking in the steering wheel. I have looked at a couple things, one sugesting that the bushings in the front suspension might be worn out. But I am not sure if this is my problem or not. So just wanted to know if anyone had an suggestions or have had experience with the same situation. Don't really think that the place we took the car to where telling us everything, I think that they were probably just trying to sell us tires. So any help anyone can give me would be really helpfull.
Thanks

Re: Shaking steering wheel problem

Ours is a 97, and its steering wheel shakes somewhat at that speed also. The problem has been the subject of several queries on previous pages on this forum. Try this link: http://faq.neons.org/faq/ for generally good Neon info, and specifically this link: http://faq.neons.org/faq/FAQ_MAINT.html#wheelshake.

Our Noen has 140,000 miles on it, and I think it is due for new suspension arm bushings - plus rebalancing the wheels.

Besides http://www.neons.org/, there is: http://www.1gn.org/

Enjoy!

Re: Shaking steering wheel problem

Having recently sold a '88 750 (old shaky at 55 MPH) and also replaced the upper control arm bushing son my son-in-laws 325ic (shaky two at 45 MPH). I would agree that the control arm bushings are most likely the culprit. If it were my car, i would buy new control arms (that contain both the ball joint and control arm bushing) and replace the old ones. For me, this cured my vibration issues.

Re: Shaking steering wheel problem

Have I confused you yet, I was thinking of my BMW issues and posted for your neon (I also have a 1998 Neon) but i still feel control arm bushings/ball joints, may be your issue.
