97 sunfire 2.2L

my sister has a sunfire w a 2.2 L and it just shut off on her one day and iam thinking about getten it off her but iam not sure wuts wrong w it i though it was the cat. but exhaust comes out when u try to start it and then i though the fuel filter but theres gas going to the rail... i was just thinking about putten a crate motor or a jasper motor in it and just sellen it again get a nice profit out of it but if its sumthing stupid then i will just fix it myself..thankx

need alittle more info to help you, explain just shut off, was she driving and it quit, sitting with it started and it died, shut it off and it wouldn't start back. Need alil more info.

she was driven i geuss then it started to spit and sputter like it was out of gas even when she put the petal to the floor it woudnt rev up it would just shut off. i got it started just by cranking it today and it did the same thing.. i was kinda thinging a timing chain but i really dont wanna replace one of those i have a 9-5 job and a 3month old baby to take care of... so i just might take it to a garage idk depends on wut u guys say u think it is.

Check fuel pressure. that sounds like a good place to start. I know it is getting fuel, but it might not be getting enough.

well i looked for the thing on the fuel rail to check fuel pressure and i didnt c one on it... i cant remeber wtf they r called but its wut u hook the fuel pressure gauge up 2. wut should the pressure be?
