OnStar will be usless next month?
http://thecarnut.typepad.com/steve_p..._to_die_o.html
Looks like I have an excuse to pull all of the equipment out of my truck to use that space for an amp or an inverter... has anybody ever pulled the antenna off the side glass before? I'm curious if it's going to leave a mark.

Re: OnStar will be usless next month?
Please don't pollute this forum with the GM bashing lies written in that linked blog.
Next month?? it will work for at least 14 more months. Onstar will function at least until February 2008. If some areas lose service after then, it will be because Cell phone companies like verizon turn it off, not because of anything GM did wrong. After the law changed, GM informed buyer that it may only work til 2008, but that still sounded good to car buyers in 2003 or 2004. If a person chooses to prepay 36 months service $ 600. GM will give the equipment for FREE. The driver would pay $16 per month for the service anyway. |

Re: OnStar will be usless next month?
I have to wonder why the article wasn't written about ADT Secirity Systems and how their customers will go without protection due to this. It affects a lot more people than the 4M OnStar subscribers, including many businesses.
I'm thinking that the FCC will get an earful about this from more than just GM, and some arrangement will be made to provide analog beyond 2008. Meanwhile, it isn't as if GM is "screwing" it's customers by installing analog cullular comm systems. It isn't their fault the FCC changed the rules, and despite their knowing about it, in order to make OnStar work at all it HAD TO BE analog since many areas of the continent still have only analog cellular service, if any service at all. Further, GM offering an upgrade to digital OnStar for a $600 fee. I'm sure they would be making very little profit at that rate. Try to find a similar system for any vehicle for less. Not that I'm a big fan of Big Brother, err... OnStar, but this particular author is obviously a hater of domestic anything. He never mentions anything about some of the imports' slavery activities, monopolistic activities, or questionable business dealings. That wouldn't be "fair" to the poor imports. Besides, they'd sue for libel. |

Re: OnStar will be usless next month?
I have read the previous posts. I'm not going to get into GM bashing, but I'd like to point something out.
There is only one way to upgrade. You can't purchase the chips necessary to upgrade on their own. You have to upgrade on their terms or get no upgrade at all. I'd take two options: Cost of material and labor and continue subscribing to OnStar on my terms or the current option, $199 1 year renewal and $50 in parts. One option is not a choice. I chose GM for two reasons. I wanted American steel and OnStar for piece of mind for my wife. Now, I only have one reason and it's turning into a bad one. So, why aren't we discussing the lack of choices? We paid for the cars, we are customers of OnStar and we have a choice to either make noise, accept what they offer, go without OnStar service and know that the extra money you paid for a useless system in your car is now obsolete or sell your GM car. It's nice that we have more choices than what they're giving us. |
