96 Passport timing

I did not follow proper procedures when replacing timing belt and tensioner. Now I am out of time and cannot seem to find marks to realign camshaft pulleys. Any Suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Chilton's doesn't show good diagram of where timing marks are.

Re: 96 Passport timing

I'm not a fan of Chilton's, try, is it, Hanes manual?

Don't worry too bad though, there shouldn't be any internal damage - non-interferance engine design.

DO make sure you've changed your waterpump at the same time though, so you don't have to go back in within the next 90-100k miles.

Re: 96 Passport timing

The writing and arrows on belt face out and point clockwise . Belt has 2 solid lines on the belt , they line up with markes on the cam sprockets , the left is about 45 degress to the left starting with mark straight up , the right is about 45 degress to the right from straight up . The solid belt lines should line up easy this way of not move one sprocket till it does this should get it close for the bottom . The dots on belt line up with the mark on crank sprocket this sprocked should have the sprocket key on right side , timing mark on left and both horizonal on engine. You may have to turn belt by moving the cam sprokets just make sure the cam marks stay lined up with the belt markes. Then let the tensioner off.

Re: 96 Passport timing

Not all non OEM timing belts have all 3 marks. I purchased a kit off ebay and my timing ended up being off 3 times. because the belt only had 2 solid lines and no dotted line for the crank. Went to Honda dealer bought new timng belt with correct marks and have been good to go since.
