Airconditioning help

I just had my AC system checked out at a local shop, and after waiting an hour or so, I was told that the compressor would need replacing. I was told that it would cost around $800 to replace, so I thanked the attendant for his service (it was a free check, even though he did install some freon), and went on my way.

I checked eBay, and there are a few compressors for a 95+ Metro for really cheap. There are also compressors for a 93 Metro, but they are substantially more at this time. My question is whether or not a 95 compressor can function in a 93.

Thanks,

DerMann

Re: Airconditioning help

What exactly is wrong with the compressor and how did they arrive at this conclusion. More specifically what is wrong with your a/c. Unless the compressor has totally seized up (which most often happens if the lubricating oil leaks out) it can probably be repaired/rebuilt. I have a 2000 Metro which has a Sanden compressor and I know they sell a rebuild kit which can fix a cracked head or leaking gasket. Not sure if the bearings can be replaced if that's the problem but I'm quite sure that can be done also.

Re: Airconditioning help

I was told that they attempted to install refridgerant, and when they started the AC, the refridgerant would just bubble out. So they patched it, and when they started the AC again, it would just blow fuzes.

How much do those repair kits go for, because I can get a new compressor, and clutch, for $100 and just have them install it.

Re: Airconditioning help

If it is blowing fuses the problem may be as simple as a short in the wiring harness. It could also be a short in the compressor clutch coil. You don't need to change the compressor to change the clutch coil. I cannot remember how much the rebuild kit is but in this case I doubt you need a new compressor - does not sound like a mechanical problem with the compressor.

As for the refrigerant bubbling out - out of where exactly. Is it a leak and if so where is it. They should have measured the pressure (low side and high side) with a set of manifold guages and then based on that provided a diagnosis of the likely cause.

Re: Airconditioning help

I'll give them a call tomorrow (well, later today, I suppose...), I can't recall exactly what was wrong.

Oh, I also did not answer your question, "More specifically what is wrong with your a/c."

It is able to produce air, but it is not cold. The previous owner said that it needed freon. That's exactly what I told the man at the shop.
