1995 Jetta Blower Motor

Hi,

I have a 95 jetta GLIII ( I think, pretty sure anyway) and not sure about the engine. I think it's the smallest weakest one.

Anyway, My blower motor is not working. A few days ago only speeds 2 and 4 were working and now none of them work. My father told me to check the wires on the blower motor to make sure none of them came loose or off (the car has 185+K miles on it and it bounces like a fat kid running(no offense to fat kids)) so it wouldn't surprise me if it did.

My question is two fold. Number one: Any suggestions on fixing it or should I be checking for something specifically to identify the problem. Other then loose wires of course, and

Number two: Where is the blower motor? How hard is it to get to? Can I see it from the engine compartment or do I need to go into the dash? My car has no glove box. (that's actually 3 questions. sorry)

It's behind the dash on the right side. I can't remember for sure, but you may be able to get to it by removing the knee guard. If two of the speeds were working, then it sounds to me like the switch on the dash may be going bad. I'd check there first. It would not be easy for the wires to detach from the blower motor and the motor generally starts making a loud grinding noise before it goes bad.

How hard is it to fix the switch if that is the case? How do I verify it's the switch other then putting a new switch in?

Take off the climate control panel. Then use a multimeter to check for continuity on the back side of the switch. I can't remember whether there is a ground on the harness connection to the switch. But I'm sure you can trace the wires and figure it out. I believe that the switch is a simple variable resistor, but I've never looked very carefully. If you have to replace it, I'd go to a junk yard, you can probably pick one up for $3.00.

so I pulled the panel off yesterday to just havea look around and I can't figure out how to get the switch taken out of the panel. I can take the front piece off that turns the switch but I can't figure out how to get it out.

I can't find a good diagram on the web either. can you maybe walk me through it?

It's been nearly a year since I took mine apart, but I believe that it slides down a centimeter or so, then pulls out. Like I said, it's been awhile. I don't remember it being difficult to figure out though when I looked at it.

I found a switch on line for the fan (it's for a 91 not a 95, but I expect the cost is similar:

price was $10.95.
I'd buy one new considering the cost (providing it's your problem).
