I have a 97 tansport. When you accelerate there is a loud clicking noise. (like putting a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle.) The faster you go the louder. louder when it is cold also. The noise does not occur when you rev the engine sitting still. Thus it is not an engine noise. The van shifts fine. I am thinking maybe the CV joint? The boots are still intact. Any thoughts of what it may be? And is it worth the cost of fixing? The van has 160,000 miles and is in very good shape other than that noise.

Re: 97 transport clicking noise
I have a clicking noise in my trans too. Mine happens only when in drive and when not accelerating very quickly.
Mine has to do with the TCC system. Check to see if this noise occurs in all gears. Check to see if it worsens when turning left or right. |

Re: 97 transport clicking noise
Yes for the idea of checking noise when turning wheels, and appplying some torque when doing so. THis will exacerbate CV joint noise if that is the case. And a shaft complete with both CV joints is not very expensive; doing the job requires pulling shaft from hub, disconnecting ball joint and tie rod end, annoying, but not out of reach of DIY. And a shop should not take more than one hour to do it with proper equipment.
