96 Sub. Fuel Pump

Hey I am getting ready to do the fuel pump on my 96 suburban 7.4 The pump has not gone out but I want it replaced before a long trip and I don't know how old (or original) this one is.....I know how to drop the tank....how about getting enough slack in the fuel lines to lower the tank????

Re: 96 Sub. Fuel Pump

That is the hard part.
I lower the tank about 3-4 inches or just just enough to reach up over it to unplug fuel line and vent lines and pump wires.
Watch on the front and rear end of tank for vent lines and or charcoal filters cans/boxes to.
I find it helps to remove the drive shaft for more room to reach up over the tank to unhook lines and wires.
Also the filler neck is a pain.
I leave it all together on tank. Just unbolt the upper neck from body.
Good luck.

Re: 96 Sub. Fuel Pump

The worst part is getting the gas lines loose from the sending unit,so rusted up and the fittings are rusted up very badly.Stay away from aftermarket pumps, they are junk and the aftermarket's warranty is denied 99.9% of the time. The excuse is improper installation.Go with a GM fuel pump, from the dealer which is more expensive than an aftermarket fuel pump.Change the fuel filter also and it is part of the warranty on the fuel pump. There is no sense leaving the old fuel filter on full of crud and dirt that will kill the fuel pump.

No doubt on the AC/Delco pump......been down that road with my Camaro and will never do it again. Is there plenty of play in the fuel lines to lower the tank?

No Not all of the way down.
Just lower enought to reach up over it and un hook fuel lines and wires.
Usually 3-4 inches.

Re: 96 Sub. Fuel Pump

Do I need the special fuel line tools to release the fuel lines. Mine is in the center of the truck right behind the rear axel.

Re: 96 Sub. Fuel Pump

Some you do.
First look for the 2 plastic tabs on side of connector.
If it has them just take your fingers and mash them in and pull line off.
Some also have a loop ring around the connector that you pinch down and remove.
And then some it is a special tool.
