Have a 95 ford explorer that the transmission slips on cold mornings.
I start out ok drive about 200 yards stop at sign and I feel the transmission disengage. it takes about a minute to get it back. after that it works fine all day. If I start out in 1st drive the 200 hards with out shifting, stop the go 1st , 2nd, then drive it works all day OK. Any ideas, Please Thanks:shocked: |

The symptoms you give would indicate once the transmission fluid starts moving along well (starts to warm, become more viscous) the transmission starts to work normal.
Automatic Transmissions are comprised of a torque converter, a series of gears, clucthes, and hydraulic pumps that push transmission fluid throughout the transmission. The fluid in the trans makes the automatic shifting possibile. In the cold the fluid moves slower, especially the fluid that makes the different shifts possible. Also any gunk that may have accumulated in the oil may slow things down. If this is typical '95 the trans fluid is original. Have the trans fluid changed and a new filter put in. The service center should also clean inside the pan bottom when they replace the fluid. If the trans is otherwise fine this should resolve this issue. If there is no change in transmission operation, then it is an indication that wear and tear has taken it's toll on the clutches in the trans and it needs a rebuild. jeff |
