Re: oil flow or oil pump problem
i would look into this before you change the oil pump. sounds more like an electrical issue than oil pressure.when was the last oil change? do you hear any exessive noise frome the top end?

Re: oil flow or oil pump problem
First off, what chassis model is it? E23? E32? E38? Would be good to post that info so we better know what we are up against...
Some one might suggest checking something that your car doesn't even have or doesn't even apply...The engine compartment has ton's of electrical connectors...I hope you didn't clean the engine bay with water or a pressure washer? Beside the battery terminal under the hood(bonnet) (my E32 750 has one), there's another connector. I accidentally unplugged mine once and my car came up with C/C messages about the oil. It shut off subsequently and would not start. I just happened to see it unplugged when I looked in the engine compartment and plugged it back in...the rest is history... If you need pictures, I'll take some in the morning...but on my E32, it's a beigey rectangular connector...

I think there is an oil level sender...it's possible the connector to this sender might be dirty or corroded. I don't know where it is in your case but this might be something to consider. There is a "storage" oil level where the car can sit for longer periods of time without the corrosive properties attacking certain seals. However, there is enough oil in the engine to start the car every week or so (as recommended in most situations) to lube the seals and components and/or move the car if needed, but not good for every day driving or regular short trips. That's why I ask if the engine oil is at a level high enough. A car will burn a small amount of oil when it's running.
