LMM/SMS Audi R10

Here's a mini-pic review of the LeMans Miniatures/Scalemotorsport Audi R10. This is a kit that will let you building either the 1st or 3rd place finishers in the 2006 LeMans. You have to paint the silver and they recommend you use white under the gray.

This is by far the best box I have seen of any kit. It definitely beats MFH.

PE appears to be up to SMS's usual quality. Great double layer engraving.

There are two sets of clear for the headlights. The small bag includes the headlight bezels and lens.

Wheels are nice. The tires are plain but they come with full color Michelin decals.

The main bag contains lots of parts. Sorry about the blurry background. I was somewhat rushed. Not many parts, but what is in there is nicely detailed. Of course though there is lots of cleaning of the resin posts. By far the best pieces in the kit is the brakes. Too bad they are covered up. There is also a paint chip to match the paint with. There were also several small parts like the wheel nuts, but I didn't take them out for risk of loosing them.

Chassis plate is one big piece. No CF whatsoever to cover it! This is my only complaint other than the cleanup needed in the kit. This is a colaboration between LMM and the creators of the best CF out there!

And now the body... The small pieces/fins are separate in either resin or PE. My rear wing unfortunately was slightly warped, but it is fixable.

Decals by Cartograf. Don't need to say much more. Don't know if Revell can beat that even if they use Cartograf.

One final pic of steering wheel. Nice detail.

Now we wait until about June for the RoG version. Hope you guys like the pics and hope you all decide on what you want. The main point is that you need to do what is best for you.
Nic

This is 1/24th? Looks pretty damn nice. I love SMS period. They are going to be the bar some day, and this will help. Having them make their own kits now is a definite bonus for me. I will be purchasing this and the Corvette too!

BTW, how did you get this, lol?

$135 from Stradasports.com. Kevin just out of the blue told me he had them in and since I love 1/24 LeMans winners....

Re: LMM/SMS Audi R10

Hi Nic,

thanks for the quick kit review. Now interested modelers can see, what the kit-box contains.

Looking at the etched parts I am a little bit disappointed. At the Nürnberg Toy Fair a photo of the prototype showed etched parts for the brake, nice details, now they come in resin.

As there are no CF-decals in the box, you have to buy them as a separate decal sheet from SMS (or other brands), that rises the kit price from $135 – $140 again (somehow it seems that they learned from Tamiya: they sell the etched parts separately)

Looking at the prices of the LMM kits of the EasyLine, they are around $105 - $115. Those kits and the Audi are similar concering amount of parts, construction, etc. So what justifies the price-difference?

Re: LMM/SMS Audi R10

I've sent a mail to Angele from LMM asking nicely what was the aim of doing it with SMS if it was to give no alu whels or carbon decals, and still maintening a regular LMM price. Export easier maybe? Coz otherwise it's a typical LMM kit right ?
still no answer as soon as I have one i'll let you know guys.

Could it be that the resin body was made for SMS and he is the one selling and distributing them. I know that is his type of packaging. He also has 2 other kits coming out also a cobra daytona and a trans kit for the revell c6r.
The packaging is the same as this audi kit.

Looks great, I'm a big fan of LMM. Hopefully they have a Peugeot 908 in the works.

Re: LMM/SMS Audi R10

I am also a little dissapointed. I have alot of respect for SMS's products but this kit isnt what I would expect from them. Not many turned parts and no CF from a company who built a rep for just those things.

Guess those have to be bought seperately or will come out later in a more expensive "super-detailed" offering. I am a huge LM fan and was really looking forward to this, it just doesnt give me the urge to buy it though.

This seems to be fairly common honestly. I got their F1-2000 detail kit a few years ago. It was cool, but I was expecting a LOT more for a detail set for that cost. It has a lot of pieces, but not many that really help the model out. The main thing it has is the carbon fiber decal kit, which is nice for not having to make your own masks.

Re: LMM/SMS Audi R10

I don't think the price of this kit is really that far out of line.
A LeMans Miniatures kit of this type will normally go for $115 American dollars. Add in a decent size photoetch sheet for $20 more, and that's right about what you would pay for both items seperately.

Still, I like the idea of waiting on the Revell of Germany kit. That kit, plus the Carto decals and photoetch sheets that will almost definetly be available will probably cost less than half of this kit. And you get and engine to boot.

Re: LMM/SMS Audi R10

Thanks for the review Nic,
you just made me make a purchase ;-)
I paid 120€ including shipping from -
Carerashop.de I normally shop @
www.Automobilminiaturen.de,
but the R10 is not yet available there. I will make a copy of
the body and will be turning it into a slotcar.
Now all I want is a Peugeot 908 LM in 1/24.....
