Starter problem?
I'm really getting behind on fixing problems on my 92 PA (due to more extreme problems on my Honda Civic), so I'd better start somewhere on my list...
The most annoying problem right now is starting. It's a frequent problem, and the symptom is that when you hit the key the starter will spin without engaging, or spin for a second and disengage (still spinning). It eventually grabs, and starts easily once it grabs. Battery voltage looks OK, but for I first step I should probably take it in and get it tested under load. I have cleaned the cable connections on the battery very well, so that shouldn't be the issue. I have not looked at the starter end of the cable, so I am thinking if the battery tests OK, I should crawl under and check the starter end. If that's OK, I assume pull the starter and get it checked. Does this sound like maybe a solenoid problem? If so, can I just replace the solenoid without replacing the whole ($95.00) starter? Thanks for advice. |

Hello Doug,
Good to see you haven’t given up on the PA! The starter has a clutch that has gone defunct on your car. Unless you have a local alternator/starter repair shop, you will need to buy a mew or rebuilt starter. The solenoid will not fix this!
