quick help... need to run the starter...

I have my engine and tranny out. i need to rotate the enigine so that I can unbolt the torque converter. the starter is still attached. i took out spark plugs, engine is still to hard to crank by hand at the crank pulley....

so how do I short circuit the starter to get the engine bumped over?

i connected a battery to jumper cables, put the negative on the starter body and the pos to where the positive was. solenoid only clicked, no rotation.

Re: quick help... need to run the starter...

Jump from the battery + to the "S" (start) post of the starter solenoid.

The cables might not be able to handle the current. Try to get a better connection. Another way to rotate it is with a 1/2 inch drive socket set on the center balancer bolt.

, pull the starter, go to your local parts store and buy a tool called a flywheel turner, they work like a dam, why is the engine out?

Re: quick help... need to run the starter...

the engine and tranny are out of the car. so the orginal battery isnt connected. where should i put the negative terminal? do i need to ground the block and the starter? or just the starter?

damn, that's useful... never heard of that. i'll do that in tha morning... i gotta get this engine lift back to the eqipment rental place by 10am.

i still would like to find out how to get this starter to bump over... then i could get the engine on the stand by tonight.

i'm pulling them so that I can redo some cosmetics stuff and install this new oil pan and timing cover to fix an oil leak.

i'll post an update... with pics.

Re: quick help... need to run the starter...

here's a pic. http://bengal.missouri.edu/~klm217/update/DSC01037.JPG

the bottom terminal is where the positive battery cable was connected with the fusible link between them. the middle (smaller) terminal had another connection on it (I assume negative) and that's it.

what do I need to connect where?

when i connect battery to then bottom (postive) and middle (negative) connector, nothing happens.
if i reverse it (connect neg to where pos was) the solenoid clicks just once... but that's clearly not right because it creates little nicks/burns in the metal from the crossed current.

seems like this should be easy.

also im using (new) jumper cables, so they should handle the current just fine.....

???

Re: quick help... need to run the starter...

Stick the ground somewhere on the engine like a normal ground. Hook the power up to the normal power post on the starter, then short across the soloniod.

what exactly do you mean by short across the solenoid? (which wire, where?)

Re: quick help... need to run the starter...

Take a pair of pliers and short across the big post and the little post.

Re: quick help... need to run the starter...

Hook the battery + to the starter, where it goes.

Hook the battery - to any metal spot of the engine.

Take a screwdriver and jump from the battery + connection to the "S" connection of the solenoid (start). The solenoid should have a "S" next to one of the connections.

No ground wire runs to the starter. It has a main power wire, and the solenoid usually has 2 connections "S" wich means start, and "r" wich means run. Its self grounding.

Kevin are you trying to figure out how to get the battery negative cable to hook up"

Just hook it up the block, the starter grounds it'self.
