Opinions on dipstick heaters please

The other morning (-10 F wind chill) had me worried. The engine sounded really rough for about 5 seconds after start up. I had visions of metal on metal and an oil slurpee. Thoughts?

How about other heater types? I have a 2 mile commute to and from work. It doesn't normally get this cold in KC but I'm hoping to minimize damage from these cold starts and short city trips.

Well, a dipstick heater can only help. Not sure how much but it has to be better than nothing.
