I know very little about vehicles this old but i will try to help.

Is it perfectly alright once you get it going?

If so it sounds to me like the choke isnt working.

Also, by the age, im guessing its not an electronic choke. Check the linkages on the carb and make sure nothing has fell off or become disconnected.

Before starting it, when its cold, push the accelerator all the way to the floor and then lift completely off it fairly quickly. This is how you set the choke in some vehicles. Then try to start it with your foot OFF the gas. it should start fairly easily.

Your fuel pump could be getting tired too.

Hope this helps...
