sensors and spark plugs

1997 Ford Expedition have had the same O2 sensor issues others have had with codes for spark plugs. Changed two O2 sensors and seemed to solved issue but the idle and accelaration jerk is back.

Before I attempt to change the plugs I wanted to get the advice and recommendations of those who have attempted this:
  • What special tools needed?
  • What to watch out for to not create new problems....etc.
  • How much time to set aside for task
Not looking forward to the process after reading some of the posts on the board but got an estimate of $ 1050 to change plugs, coils and labor-not going there!

It is a 1997 Exp 5.4

Thanks

Re: sensors and spark plugs

rockauto.com has the coil packs in the range of $41.78 to $55.79 depending on the brand. Never done the job, but for he money, I think you should look it over. good luck. I have ordered parts from them for my windstar, and the experience has been good.

Re: sensors and spark plugs

Before you go real far, what are the trouble codes or which cylinder is causing the problem? There is no need changing all the coils if only one is bad. If there are no trouble codes, it may be worth an hours labor at the dealer to find which cylinder is missing then do the work yourself. Simple tools are needed to replace the parts. A 7mm socket to remove the coils and a spark plug socket and ratchet. Just take your time cause some of the plugs are kinda hard to get to.

I agree with the ol man! Only replace bad coils. Changing the plugs is time-consuming, but can be done with patience.
