Yeah I feel the same way, and this motor is well suited to a turbo setup. The base kit should be around 5 psi with options of more boost easily available!

How much hassle would it be to install on the 5,3 V8 if it is available for it?

--What REAL numbers are we talking in gains? Horsepower & torque?

--Is there any noticeable lag in the turbo or what?

--What mods do we have to make to the vehicle to make it ready for a turbo? Replace the fuel pump for a larger unit? Any internals in the motor?

Never dealt with turbo's before so I don't want to destroy anything on my ride ya know. It has to last me at least 6-10 years, so the turbo MUST be 100% reliable.

Finally, what is the price on the turbo kit & what would it cost to install it?

Our original intentions were for the 4.2 because of production numbers. But the 5.3 responds extremely well also, it just needs some more r/d time as some of the piping is different. I will keep you in mind.

As for real numbers on the 5.3 , the fullsize trucks are putting down 420hp and up to the wheels and almost 500 trq.

On the low boost settings you will not need to add anything.
In high boost you will need to add alky injection for the high numbers of 490 to 510 hp just to be safe.

By the way no car even off the showroom floor is 100%. I've seen problems as you drive off the lot. But reliability shouldn't be an issue if you do your regular maintanance.

Oh yeah price, We are shooting to be in the 4000 range, with very simple install. A few air tools and a saturday afternoon will have you spooling.

As for turbo lag, the housings are sized so the lag is minimal and full boost comes on around 2800- Lots of useable rpm left!!

Re: Anyone interested in Turbo kit?

What kind of turbos and intercoolers are you using? How are you reprogramming the ECU to accomodate positive manifold pressure (piggyback/reflash/ECU modifications)? How are the injectors performing under full boost? The last thing you want to do is to be under boost when the injectors go lean from excessive duty cycles--especially with the stock cast pistons. Also, some 4.2 engines were having issues with sleeve linings, have you been having any problems with your prototypes?

What kind of numbers are you pulling at 5psi on the 4.2?

I would also like to know what you are going to be using for engine management.

First let me say we are still in developmental stages and have alot of bugs to work out.

We do not have a working prototype on a vehicle currently, we do have issues with getting a ecu program, but we are working on that.

Power as stated before was at the crank on low boost, I should not have said wheel, that was my mistake. We are predicting about 340-385 at the wheels on the 4.2 with low boost. There are still issues with turbo sizing and piping structure that take some time to work out.

I am happy to see that we have some interest and this project is not in vain. If any of you have the resources to tune the 4.2 please let me know, we can work something out. We have a programmer that will work for the 5.3, that was easy, plenty of them out there. It is the I6 I am concerned with.

I could very well be tempted to the boost side!

The price sounds good, but I am NOT mechanically inclined to touch this job. I would need someone highly qualified to perform this on my vehicle.

One problem that is coming to mind.....my extended warranty woudl be toast........come to think of it....so would my tires

I am already pushing about 345HP & almost 400lbs of torque.....so more is always better for my lead sled.

Seems I'm not the only one with a kit in developement. 2 flavors of engine management. One meant for stock engines and less than 8psi. Other has a second rail and is meant for purpose built turbo engines with forged pistons, better sleeves and very high hp. Like as in you'll need the Hd tranfercase ,4l80E and 4 FAT tires..

STSTURBOS also makes a kit for the 5.3 V8 TB. I have a post on this....

Don't know if they have anything for the inline 6 though.
