Shaky gas gauge???

On my '99(old body style) 1500 4x4 the gas gauge reads but it shakes
a little, is there a fix to this maybe new cluster or wire contact problem
or do i need to drop the tank and put in a new sender..

any thoughts??

Re: Shaky gas gauge???

If the OBS is the same as the NBS, it would be the sending unit.

Re: Shaky gas gauge???

Ok i tore the cluster out today and removed the glass, now i wonder if it
would be just that gauge ,,because if you take and move each needle
with your fingers they all have a little drag(resistance)except the
gas gauge that one moves real easy you can just spin it around freely.

that drag is what keeps the needles from shaking i think??

also somone told me you pull your cluster out and send it in to fix that.

any thoughts on this anybody????

Re: Shaky gas gauge???

It's probably the sending unit in the tank. Do a search in this forum and you will find many many posts.

Re: Shaky gas gauge???

Daman: My '98 Sub does the same thing. Reads right, just has the "jitters". There was absolutely no difference when I changed the pump/sender assy. My wiring was good and the ground by the tank was cleaned. Hope you'll post back with a fix............Steve

Re: Shaky gas gauge???

No problem Sonny thanks.

stickman,

thank you for posting you saved me time and $$ replacing the
sending unit.

now i don't know 100% for sure but like i said i think it's in the cluster
and the gas gauge alone,,somone also told me that on that
cluster you need to send it in for repair so they can fix the gas gauge
on it, so i'm not sure when i'll send it in i need the truck every day and
can't have down time right now..

stickman you may want to check into this also

Re: Shaky gas gauge???

my truck had a little shake, but the guage also did the thing where it just drops to empty every once in a while and to reset it i had to put in in neutral and back to drive.when my fuel pump went and i replaced the sending unit it fixed the problem for a while but it came back.the gas guages on these trucks just seems to be a mystery

problem solved!!!!!!!

Well i fixed my problem,it was as i described bellow
it's the gas gauge it's self,i picked one up off
ebay and checked it with my old one and like i said
it had no resistance(drag)to the needle when i moved
it with my finger,i switched over the odometer and
installed the new cluster and the gauge works
perfect!!!, so i would suggest you guy's may want to
do the same if you have this problem with your 96+ trucks.

somehow the stepper motor that runs that gauge burns
up and just moves freely and that's why it shakes.
