WIP- Tamiya Mazda 787b *FINISHED*

Just thought i'd throw up a pic of the 787b im making, im up to the body, so the decals are going to be a pain, but its coming along nicely, some colours in the kit arent listed on the paint list, you realise there are colours you dont have once you start making it. Some instructions dont seem to be clear on part installation or decal location....defintely need reference pics for this kit

Its a out of the box kit, aint got the skills to go to full on....but the decals are put on around the side intakes and they dont seem to bad, mr mark softener seems to work well.

here is the interior and engine - camera phone pics so its the best i can manage until i can work out how to use my brothers camera

Comments welcome

Frank

The engine bay and interior is looking good so far.I'll be watching to see how you tackle the body on this kit.I must admit looking at pictures of the decal sheet gives me nightmares! Good luck with it though.

Re: WIP- Tamiya Mazda 787b

the decals aren't to bad, but I used the Cartograf decals for mine

so far its looking good, the hard thing is spraying the orange on the front winshield as there is no decal for it

NICE I have the same model here. I found the decals to be easier than expected.

Re: WIP- Tamiya Mazda 787b

Just an update, its alot easier than it looks, some parts are a bit of an annoying fit but you get there in the end

Im attacking the body tomorrow

im doing that right now....yes hard, no masking template or groove in the shield you can mask up to....im going to freehand it using a brush (x-6) tried masking it cant see where to cut!....going by the last few kits ive made, tamiya seem to have improved over the years on the newer kits

Actually, there is a line in the windshield to mask to, it's just very feint.

Re: WIP- Tamiya Mazda 787b

What I did was to place the masking tape on a clean piece of glass and then use a straight edge and new #11 blade to cut a nice clean strip of tape. I then carefully lined the freshly trimmed edge up with the edge in on the clear part and once I was happy I had the edge I needed masked, I burnished the tape down well. Once that was done I airbrushed the orange.

Re: WIP- Tamiya Mazda 787b

its all good, i have done the front window....came out well! and yes i sprayed it on..instead of have the orange having a curve in the window i just went straight side to side, much easier and still looks ok.looks alot better sprayed!..the instruction are not very clear on some sections on this kit, not much reference for the exhaust side of the body.....i wish tamiya cans had another 50ml of paint in them!

Re: WIP- Tamiya Mazda 787b

body is done, going to clear it tomorrow then do the final touches...the decals are hard to work with (i found anyway) fitment of some just dont work, especially around the front air dams, i ended up painting that section. found a good match with gunze sangyo brand acrylic, dries slightly darker, but very close. Im happy with end result however a few of the decals dont sit down the best, mainly the larger ones....

anyway here is the body decaled

i will get some completed pics up, hopefully tomorrow or the day after, thanks

Re: WIP- Tamiya Mazda 787b

I finished the model today, i clear coated the decals yesterday, unfortenly the silver decal on the rear hood started to crack, it isnt too bad, but dissapointing. Its hard to notice at a distance. I think i went to hard on teh clear. Its funny though, only the silver did it, all other decals were unharmed

If you have the skills, i defintely recommend painting the green, the decals just dont have a great fit in some areas.

I will get some pics up tomorrow in daylight of the completed kit. looks great against my other mazda rotary models
