carb. problem
I have a 1968 boat with a Buick v6 inboard/outboard. It sat for about four years and I have recently started refurbishing it. As you might expect, the carb was gunked up pretty badly so I rebuilt it (Rochester 2gc). Now it will idle great but won't take any throttle past about 1200 rpm. The accelerator pump is working great. When I open the throttle I get two good streams of gas into the throat of the carb. The only way I can get it to rev up is to bounce the throttle quickly on and off but it won't stay revved up. It just dies. It could be the timing is retarded too much but I don't think so because it ran great before it was put up for four years and I wouldn't think the timing would change. I'm not a carb. guy but I was thinking it could be the power valve or possibly the mixture screws. Warm weather is coming and I've got my water skis ready. PLEASE HELP!!!

could also be the fuel filter not letting enough gas in...
are there any electronic parts on the carb or is it all mechanical?

carb is all mechanical (1968). plently of fuel getting to carb. (not filter related)

could be a jet plugged up i take them back out see whats going on see if tips of are plugged..another thing you ight try is runing sea foam in it that stuff cleans and is good i use it in my bike..also try putting leaded gas in it you can buy a can at autozone..or andvanced or about any part stores.

wouldnt the lead foul up the injectors?
maybe not. i thought lead was used as a lubricant in older cars and using it in a modern engine would do harm. it sounds like a fuel starvation problem for sure. check the jets what about the float level. i said it could be the filter because a clogged filter would flow enough for idle, but as you open the throttle, the bowl wouldnt fill fast enough to sustain the gas requirements. it would also explain why you can rev it if you bounce the throttle. the float level will have a similar effect, but not the bouncing part. what about the metering rods. they could be adjusted wrong. i cant remember the exact name, but the piece that pushes down the metering rods could also need adjustment. it has a metal rod that is pulled down by vacuum, and a triangular piece at the top that pushes down the rods. if you bend the triangle up or down, it will actuate the rods at different times.

seafoam is an amazing cleanser for the engine in general.
it cleans sludge when you pour it in the oil. it cleans carbon when you pour it down the carb. it cleans the carb when you mix it with your gas. you might as well try it and see if it helps
