87 GT Tranny
So, is my trans a Getrag design or an Izusu? I believe that Muncie made both transmissions but that the Getrag is heavier duty.
Furthermore, I was having clutch issues but it got fixed with a new clutch. However, when the car rolled out of the shop it no longer had use of 1st and 2nd gears. IT was fine going in (except for the clutch) and bad coming out. Now, where 1st and 2nd are supposed to be I get 3rd and 4th, as well as in their proper positions. Any help? |

Re: 87 GT Tranny
Sounds like the select cable is broken. That is the cable that moves the linkage left to right. www.rodneydickman.com sells replacement cables that are a direct replacement..
The cables is a shiethed wire, The wire corrodes and weakens over time and will just snap. I replaced mine in '06 after 19 years. The hard part is taking off the center console and running the new cable through the firewall. Use some lock tight on the fastening nut when you reconnect the linkage. |

Yeah, looks that way. Finally got a round tuit and checked everything... there's very little lee-way in the cable and I think there should be more. I've ordered a replacement for it.
Thanks. |

Re: 87 GT Tranny
Fiero getrag transmissions are few and expensive. The quotes I've had on rebuilding a getrag is around $900. An already rebuilt on is usually in the $1200-1500 range. There are transmissions from a Beretta that can be used as a replacement and some adaptions are required. Again www.rodneydickman.com has parts and directions on how to do it.
I have one on my shelf that has bad syncros, I'm waiting to get $$ ahead to get it rebuilt as my 87 GT has the getrag. |
