Can't keep coolant in it-Achieva

Thanks for taking the time to read this. All ideas are welcome and appreciated.
1992 two door- yellow with red interior. 2.3L single overhead cam

It runs great and does not overheat on road trips. I had the head replaced 3 years back. About a year ago I replaced the leaky radiator, (could't keep water in it) with a new one. The new one did not include a tube to attach the small hose on the top of the reservoir, so I plugged it. The only place I have ever seen it leak from is the rad cap when it is parked, replaced that, twice. I can see the thermostat opening and closing with my dash guage, replaced it for kicks. I have had some spells where the low coolant light didn't come on for a month. Lately it is always on, even after I fill it. So I check the level frequently and pay close attention to the temp guage. Thanks again, Tom.

Re: Can't keep coolant in it

Welcome to AF.

For your system to work properly it needs the resivoir connected.

One other reason might be thiers air trapped in the cooling system. This needs purged or it'll overheat & or blow out the coolant.

On the low coolant light, if thiers an air bubble stuck to the sensor then it will trip the low level light.

Hope that helps.

Re: Can't keep coolant in it

Yeah I think it has an air pocket, sometimes as it warms it gets to about 220 degrees before the thermostat opens, like the thermostat is not wet. I stop and check the reservoir and it is full. This reservoir has a larger bottom hose which T's into the lower radiator hose. Have you ever heard of anyone epoxying a fitting into one of these fiber tanks? Thanks for your help, Tom.

No I havnt heard of anyone fixing a fiting onto the tank.

It might be easier to find a used one at your local salvage yard, probly pretty cheap too.
Could even check ebay as they have a lot of GA parts.

Several years are the same, like 92-94 or 95 GA.

Re: Can't keep coolant in it

I would get the engine warmed up and remove the radiator cap, being carefull not to get burnt.

Let it run with the cap off and fill as needed, be sure to turn on the heater full blast to get the air out of the heater core.

Hope that helps
